What determines your success?

Two of my close friends pressured me to watch a series called ‘the bold type’ on Netflix. I enjoyed it and I appreciated how they emphasized on the importance of friendship, hard work, and love.

One character’s words and actions caught my attention and led me to write this very blog. His stage name was ‘Alex’ and he always used to say that his girlfriend was more successful than him. Keep in mind that the two held stable jobs, a fixed income of a good amount but he based his judgment on the fact that his girlfriend was a well-renowned surgeon while he was just a writer for a magazine. And so here is my question, what determines success?

Is it a fat cheque? A mansion in Runda, or connections to one of the most influential people in the world? What I think is this. Whatever you hold close to your heart and say ‘’I am proud of achieving this” is what I can call success. Before Alex decided to date Alicia, he initially declined his feelings for her due to this reason.

Since time immemorial, husbands in most marriages have held higher financial positions in the family compared to the wives so we can't blame Alex for his decision. Being brought up in such a society will birth men who will prefer to save their ego when it comes to settling with a woman who is ‘’more successful’’ and women who are waiting for prince charming to unburden them from their financial constraints. What's the bigger picture?

The narrative of gender roles is changing every day. Surviving in an unfavorable economic environment requires the efforts of both the man and woman joining their 100 per cents. We need a collective union whereby we support one another and not one where we try to bite each other's heads off.

The term success was unclear to me because I didn’t take time to understand what success means to me and not to my peers. We learn new things every day for sure. I've learned to be more grateful for the little successes that have made me the person I am today, like starting this blog, what about you RAIRgem?
