Are you humble?

On October 13th this year, I found myself sitting next to one of the editors of Wikipedia. We had a Multimedia and development festival in school and so many different speakers were invited and we were their esteemed audience. In this particular session, we were split into two groups. Those who wanted to know more about life in the newsroom were separated from those who were interested in the field of public relations.

In the pr session is where I got to sit next to the editor of Wikipedia. My gosh, what a position. The venue had few seats and the only one available was the one next to him and of course because of our norms it seems disrespectful to sit next to this man. However, he welcomed me with a warm smile and gave me permission to sit saying ‘’it was no problem at all’’. To be honest I felt so excited. I wanted to ask him so many questions but I just went mute.

How many times do we meet famous people but we get disgusted by their level of humility? I remember watching a Nigerian movie with my mum one day and the queen in the movie didn’t want her son (the future king) to get married to a commoner. Commoner in other words meaning an ordinary person who doesn’t come from royalty. The queen goes to an extent of trying to kill the maiden whom the king is in love with. Luckily, she escapes death and I’m sure you know how the story flowed.

How many times have we treated our friends, family, strangers, the sick, the poor, and the needy as lesser humans? I admire doctors, people who donate, and people who take care of the elderly because they interact with human beings when they are most vulnerable. Imagine the risk that doctors face having to tender to Covid-19 patients or a niece who is taking care of her grandmother. Are we willing to lower our pride and stretch a helping hand to those around us in both big ways and small? I know I am.
